Don't Wear Flip-flops on the Subway

Okay, yes, this is a story of the kindness of strangers. My point would be that if the hapless shoe-loser had been wearing appropriate footwear, this never would have happened. With thanks to alert reporter JMY for sharing.

From the New York Times Metropolitan Diary, September 12, 2010

Dear Diary:

On the F train from Brooklyn to Manhattan: A young woman with a New York City map steps on the train at Jay Street-Borough Hall. As she steps on, the woman behind her on the platform accidentally steps on the back of her flip-flop, which ends up falling between the platform and the car.

The New Yorker is extremely apologetic, offering to give her money, as the young woman hobbles over to the pole and balances on her one foot. A few people around her have taken notice and chuckle a little. She says she’ll get off in Manhattan and buy a new pair.

Two stops later, another woman approaches and pulls a single flip-flop out of her purse before getting off the train: “I can’t imagine you walking down the streets with only one on — take it!” Kristin Wartman
